Aging Backwards: 10 Years Younger and 10 Years Lighter in 30 Minutes a Day by Miranda Esmonde-White

A ground-breaking guide to understanding how aging happens in our cells and how to maintain and repair those cells--and roll back joint pain and muscle loss at any age--through gentle, scientifically designed workouts based on Classical Stretch and Essentrics, developed by the author and star of PBSs Classical Stretch series.
Its never too late to slow down, or even reverse, the effects of aging. The human body is designed to function for the full length of its life--and with gentle, full-body flexibility and strengthening exercises we can look and feel tremendous, vibrant and active at any age, and well into our senior years. After all, the body is the worlds most efficient self-healing machine. And yet, remarkably, many of us neglect the single most important system in the body--the one that makes all the others work--the muscular system.
The typical message we get as we age is that we can move less and should take it easy--exactly the wrong advice. Surprisingly, fitness enthusiasts often do as much harm to their bodies as people living sedentary lives. For example, yoga instructors get tennis elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome from daily stress on wrists and elbows; Pilates instructors suffer pectoral and tricep muscle atrophy and even professional athletes grow overweight and suffer countless ACL, meniscus and disc injuries. Ligaments are virtually ignored by most exercises routines and yet joint health is essential in order to remain active. But these afflictions dont happen overnight, and with Aging Backwards we can slow or prevent their onset, and often reverse their symptoms.

Miranda Esmonde-White born May 9, is a Canadian fitness trainer, former ballerina with the National Ballet of Canada , and The New York Times bestselling author of books on aging, health and fitness. Her study of the benefits of eccentric stretch training has also been the basis of the pledge documentaries Aging Backwards and Forever Painless airing on PBS public television. A self-described army brat born in Edmonton to Lt. Laurence Esmonde-White, she moved with her family to Calgary, and eventually to Montreal. Esmonde-White's next effort, her own company making homemade rag dolls , led to her becoming an executive at the toymaker Hasbro , but business trips kept her away from her child, who was then five years old. Separating from the corporate world and searching for the means to support herself, she started to teach fitness classes in a nearby church and soon had almost five classes per day.

Former ballerina Miranda Esmonde-White demonstrates dynamic strengthening and stretching exercises. This workout strengthens and tones every muscle group in your legs, leaving them stronger, leaner, and more defined. This stomach flattening workout stretches and strengthens every muscle needed to smooth out your tummy. This workout not only strengthens it also stretches hips and glutes, leaving your entire lower body liberated and flexible. Your connective tissue surrounds your entire body from the top of your head to the tip of your toes. An all-standing workout will improve the mobility of your spine and keep you standing tall all day long. THis all-barre, waist toning workout is aimed at strengthening your abs and slenderizing your core.

Following her formation as a ballet dancer, she performed around the world with the National Ballet Company of Canada. In her mid thirties Miranda joined the ranks of millions of people who suffer from chronic back pain. Determined to rid herself of the pain she tried everything from physiotherapy, massages, acupuncture and visits to chiropractors. All temporarily relieved the pain but nothing got rid of it permanently. Simultaneously to suffering from back pain she began creating a stretch-based fitness program called Classical Stretch. Much to her surprise her own program cured her of her own back pain. That program sowed the seeds to what is now known as Essentrics.

Developed by Miranda Esmonde-White, Classical Stretch is a technique that unlocks parts of the body that have been seemingly bolted shut, what we call inflexibility, as well as reducing inches while stretching and lengthening the body. In this complete workout, you will regain this flexibility and automatically improve your entire look: thinner legs, flatter stomachs and relief of overall pain. Athletes need 3 basic components to be successful: speed, power and to remain injury free. This is the first exercise program aimed specifically at achieving all three goals.
