On-Camera Flash Techniques for Digital Wedding and Portrait Photography by Neil van Niekerk

With this guidebook, photographers learn how to create stunning, professional images while avoiding the common pitfalls of using an on-camera flash. Techniques for using simple accessories such as bounce cards and diffusers, as well as how to improve a lighting scenario by enhancing it rather than overwhelming it, show photographers how to master this challenging aspect of portraiture.

Please tell us about yourself as a person and as a photographer. Where did you grow up and what sparked your desire to photograph? Were you active with the photography department in high school? Where are you living now? Can you describe the defining moment or image that made you want to become a photographer?

I decided to create a separate website just for my infrared photographs of New York. I wanted the images to be separate from my other main professional websites, since this is more of a vanity project than anything else. The image of Stacey in the purple dress was shot with available light only - with her specifically posed for the best use of the light we had right there. The other shot where she is seated at the table, had a touch of fill-flash from a Profoto B10 in a Profoto OCF beauty dish. The shot of Stacey sitting on the park wall, was shot with mostly available light -- the fill-flash I had there would have been insignificant in how she had moved.

The advice is ultimately geared towards enabling you , as the photographer, to deliver the best possible images to your clients. Developing a personal style is a never-ending journey as a photographer — honing your style along with your approach, technique, understanding and skill. For me, a second shooter is a fully fledged photographer working independently, but closely with, the main photographer. As such, there are certain things that could be and should be expected from a 2nd shooter at a wedding. Choosing which lens to use while photographing a wedding, is obviously an extension of your own style.

I would love to photograph your wedding, and work with you to and capture the spirit of your wedding day — the mood and feel of everything surrounding the celebration as you and your loved one marry each other. With a photo-journalistic approach, I want to give you images of your wedding that will look timeless — moments which encapsulate your wedding day — and give you photographs that will be a lasting memory of this important day. There are also links to where I have been showcased in some of the photography industry magazines. Please contact me about your upcoming wedding or event. I would love to hear from you.
