Book Summary: “On Writing Well”, William Zinsser

The book shows you how to think about writing, how to edit, how to properly practice your writing, when to end a piece, how to start your article, what your sentence structure should be and why , how to write in different kinds of voices and styles. It was easy. It was hard and lonely, and the words seldom just flowed. I then said that rewriting is the essence of writing. I pointed out that professional writers rewrite their sentences over and over and then rewrite what they have rewritten. I said that writing is a craft, not an art, and that the man who runs away from his craft because he lacks inspiration is fooling himself.

My favorite explicit, directional book on writing better. A must-read for anyone who does any amount of writing. I pointed out that professional writers rewrite their sentences over and over and then rewrite what they have rewritten. The sentence is too simple— there must be something wrong with it. But the secret of good writing is to strip every sentence to its cleanest components. At one time those forces were relatively few: newspapers, magazines, radio, spouse, children, pets. Today they also include a galaxy of electronic devices for receiving entertainment and information— television, VCRs, DVDs, CDs, video games, the Internet, e-mail, cell phones, BlackBerries, iPods— as well as a fitness program, a pool, a lawn and that most potent of competitors, sleep.

High-Level Thoughts

On Writing Well by William Zinsser is an excellent book for anybody who wants to learn how to write, whether about people or places, science and technology, business, sports, or about yourself. Keep in mind next time you write — and the quality of your output will be greatly improved. A professional writer must establish a daily schedule and stick to it.

Summaries, high-level notes, ratings and detailed notes for books I've read across a wide range of topics, from entrepreneurship to marketing to philosophy. Available at: Amazon. The best book on writing non-fiction I have read. If I had to recommend one book on how to write non-fiction well, this would be it. Two things happened with the arrival of the word processor: good writers got better and bad writers got worse.
