Letter from a father to his daughter, a Harvard graduate

The presence of the cap and gown in your room are symbolically marking the the countdown to the first days of the rest of your life. When you were born, graduation day seemed a million moons away. Today, I feel like we walked hand in hand with your first steps, read bedtime stories and played dress up just yesterday.

A Letter to My Daughter On Her Graduation Day

Before you were born, I fought long and hard against doctors and logic and medical science to keep you safely nestled beneath my heart. For nine long months it was you and me against the world. We won, just as we knew we would. You looked at me, eyes wide and aware, as if you knew that the fight had only just begun. In fact, my body revolted and my hormones overran my common sense, and I was terrified that I would hurt you in some way.

If you are a father of a daughter, this will likely strike a cord with you. I wrote it in June of Still gets me. Your high school graduation day has come and gone. It seems like a heartbeat ago that I sat with you in my arms—in my hands really—the day you were born and cried at how beautiful you were. I promised you then that I would always be there for you, that I would always protect you, and that I would never let anything happen to you.

You are a delicate flower. Omg crap…wait…starting over…wrong decade and century. You are a female…that makes you powerful, strong, and capable of achieving so many amazing things. It also means that you will need to navigate life with your head up and eyes straight ahead, ready to show people that you will move forward no matter what statements are made about you to try to hold you back. What I want for you is the same as most parents; I want you to find happiness, purpose, adventure, and meaning. I also want you to have fun and laughter.

This is a real letter I wrote to my daughter. This is my letter to her. I could run through a box of pens telling you how much I love you, how proud I am of you, and how excited I am for your future.

Words for my daughter

It is hard to find the words to express all that we are feeling today. And yet somehow, in a world that often overwhelmed you and placed numerous obstacles in your path, you dug down deep and found a fortitude and resilience that kept you moving forward. And as much as we would like to take credit for our part in getting you to where you are today, the truth is, it was that strength of spirit, that tenacity, that grit and that courage that played the greatest role in all that you have achieved. Today marks the end of one chapter, but also the start of a new one. The pages are blank, the plot yours to create. We have no doubt you will fill it with the warmest of characters, the most beautiful of songs, stories of meaning, messages of hope and that each word will be imbued with love and faith. And even when the pages have moments of hardship, which is sure to happen, we know you will dig down deep and tap into those very same reserves that have helped you before and in the end, you will persevere and emerge even stronger for the challenges.
