Red Hot Chili Peppers: Give It Away: The Stories Behind Every Song by Rob Fitzpatrick

Red Hot Chili Peppers front man Anthony Kiedis grew up in Hollywood, hustling a living with his actor father. He eventually discovered music and fell in with Hillel Slovak, Jack Irons, and Michael Flea Balzary to form the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Fired up by 1970s funk, rock, ska, and soul, the band fought, split, kissed, made up, and then fought again. This collision of singular personalities and musical genius resulted in a run of albums and reputation as a formidable live act. By the end of the 1980s, though, the band was one man down, with lead guitarist Hillel Slovak dying from a drug overdose. The struggle gave rise to 1989s groundbreaking Mothers Milk album. Pre-dating Nirvana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers was the first underground band to take what critics dubbed alternative rock into the mainstream charts. In 1991, Blood Sugar Sex Magik compounded the Chili Peppers success, turning its members into bona fide rock stars and plunging them headlong into a riot of drugs, sex, near-death experiences, and spiritual awakening. This book looks at the group through dozens of photographs, and examines the music and stories of one of the most original bands on the planet.

Give It Away

Red Hot Chili Peppers:Give It Away Lyrics

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been around for over 30 years and throughout their long run and still-going career, they have been the center of many controversies and debates. From their early days in the s where the band would perform wearing only a sock over their private parts, up until today playing gigs as big as the Super Bowl, the band has always pushed their performances to the limit and has gotten all kinds of reactions from all kinds of people. By analyzing the meaning behind the lyrics to an old song by the band and comparing it to a letter from the band addressing a controversy over a recent performance of the same song, one can see the paralleling ethos demonstrated. I myself am a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan but even I was not entirely convinced that the band cared or thought about anything besides getting drunk or drugged up and making money; however, after reading Scar Tissue , a biography of the lead singer of the band Anthony Kiedis, I gained an entirely new perspective on the band and now have much respect for them not only as a band as a whole but also as individuals. Through the book, I learned that all of their seemingly meaningless, in-your-face-songs actually have very deep meanings behind them based on real life experiences that the band members have gone through in their crazy lives.
