Rivington Was Ours: Lady Gaga, the Lower East Side, and the Prime of Our Lives by Brendan Jay Sullivan

Lady Gagas old friend and former DJ Brendan Jay Sullivan paints a vivid picture of the downtown scene from which she emerged.

Brendan Jay Sullivan was an up-and-coming DJ in New York City when he met Stefani Germanotta, then a struggling artist, in 2006. She was a go-go dancer who sewed her own outfits but had bigger ambitions—she wanted nothing less than to take over the music world.

In this intimate portrait of the budding star who would soon catapult to fame and fortune, the author describes afternoons sitting with Gaga on the floor of her bare Lower East Side apartment, drinking wine from pint glasses and plotting out the pop stardom that awaited her.

Filled with stories of love and heartbreak among Gaga and Sullivan and their circle of aspiring musicians and performers, and set against the vibrant backdrop of the downtown bars and parties of the mid-aughts, Rivington Was Ours is both a love letter to New York and a glimpse behind the veil of one of the biggest musical icons of her generation.

The entry to the stairway leading to Lady Gaga's apartment at is the brown door to the left of the red metal door. They described it as a third-floor walk-up with one bedroom. No, I don't have a picture of the toilet from that apartment. But consider this — the current resident hunkered down inside and refused to admit Anderson Cooper when he arrived with a 60 Minutes crew with Lady Gaga herself in tow.

This is the simple lower East Side apartment building in which the aspiring singer named Stefani Germanotta resided. A new Gaga biography claims the apartment was sparsely furnished with a futon, a queen-sized mattress and a cheap record player. She had a picture of David Bowie over her bed and she'd sit at her kitchen counter with her keyboard and her laptop, working out songs. Gaga made an instant impression on one local who asked, 'Did you know there is a prostitute that lives in the building' after seeing Gaga stumbling home at 4am 'wearing, like, nothing. The provocative outfits have not changed, as Gaga proved at the video music awards Sunday night where she won eight awards and accepted one in a dress made fully of meat.

You've just quit a well-paid career job in Australia to start a new life in "the city that never sleeps". You find an apartment in Manhattan's fashionable Lower East Side, on Rivington Street, and you're walking home, bleary-eyed, a few nights later when you're struck by the sight of an arresting young woman sitting on a stoop. Something about the woman seemed familiar, recalls Matthew Dunn who grew up in rural NSW and is now an executive at one of New York's most luxurious hotels, the Knickerbocker in Times Square. This must have been years ago, surely?
