The Only Reality Is Now: How I Stopped Worrying About the Future

Worry less. Smile more. Listen carefully. Take responsibility. Embrace the lessons. Love your life. Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen.

Focusing on the future can be helpful when it comes to taking control of your own productivity and achieving your goals, but there's a downside we don't often acknowledge. As many of us know, focusing on the future can sometimes turn into worrying about the future. While it's important to be curious about the future, it's equally important to stop obsessing about the future once it becomes unproductive or detrimental to what you're doing right now. When you constantly worry about the future, you don't have time to live in the present. This prevents you from thinking clearly and being fully invested in what you're doing right now. This is something you need to work on ASAP. If you don't, you'll always find something to worry about because the future never arrives , and you'll also waste a ton of energy along the way.

I wish I would be able to surrender life completely, but I am not there yet. Today I have stopped defining myself as a control freak. Spending my time worrying is very frustrating, and drains both my time and my energy. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery.

Worry is, sadly, an inevitability of life. Bad things are bound to happen, and the natural human reaction is to think about the negative consequences that could potentially arise. However, worry is rarely productive -- "it's something we do over and over again, without much resolution, and it's typically of the worst-case scenario of the future," explains Jason Moser, Ph. Unlike fear, which has a more pin-pointable source like a spider on the wall , people worry over "an amorphous, future uncertain threat -- something bad that might happen. While the research isn't clear on the extent to which people are predisposed to worry, it is clear that there are some personality types that are more linked to worrying than others. Neuroticism seems to be tied to worrying, for instance, as is general intolerance of uncertainty, Moser says.
