The Midas Touch: A Balanced Approach to Biblical Prosperity by Kenneth E. Hagin

I read this in December 2016.
Below is this book’s table of contents. The following is my chapter-by-chapter review and summarization of the book.

INTRODUCTION.............................................................................VII

The introduction tells the Greek mythological story of King Midas, plus its moral application to the biblical teachings and greedy teachings on prosperity.

1 SEND NOW PROSPERITY............................................................13

The first chapter outlines that God wants to and can supply all our needs. We need to be balanced in our view of Scripture though. God does not want his children poor (Gen. 13:2; 1 King. 10:7; Isa. 1:19; Job 1:3, Job 42:12; 2 Chron. 26:5; 3 John 2; Ps. 1:1-3), but God also does not want you to be greedy and desire physical things more than spiritual things.

2 OUR AUTHORITY IN THE AREA OF FINANCES..................25

Hagin outlines through the Scriptures that we were in darkness, but we (Christians) have been now delivered out from darkness and into God’s marvelous light. God has all authority and has given us some –this includes authority over our finances. Also included is Hagin’s testimony of learning and apply this teaching.

3 WAS JESUS POOR?........................................................................43

This chapter provides a good and balanced view that Jesus actually had enough to satisfy his own needs and provided for other’s needs. Hagin also points out that God is very rich in Heaven, and the New Jerusalem will be very opulent.

4 THE PURPOSE OF PROSPERITY................................................63

This is my favorite chapter. Hagin wrote “I believe the purpose of prosperity for a Christian is to do Gods work and Gods will” (64). Hagin also teaches on tithes and how it can promote the spread of the Gospel and bless the church.

5 SHOULD PREACHERS PROSPER?.............................................83

Yes, and there are actually many Bible verses on this subject. Again, Hagin gives a balanced and objective view for this. In this chapter, he also warns against greed and wrong motives for ministry. He also emphasizes the importance of financial accountability.

6 AVOIDING ABUSES AND FALSE PRACTICES.....................111

I recommend this chapter to be read by every Bible teacher and preacher who wants to teach at length on prosperity. Hagin wrote, “If wealth alone were a sign of spirituality, then drug traffickers and crime bosses would be spiritual giants. The Bible says that those who suppose that gain is godliness [are] ‘men of corrupt minds,’ filled with perverse disputings and destitute of the truth (see First Timothy 6:5) …Certainly, financial prosperity is not an infallible gauge of a persons spirituality” (116, 117-118). On the subject of Giving To Get, Hagin wrote “There is no spiritual formula to sow a Ford and reap a Mercedes…. Our motives are crucially important. We need to be willing to give in obedience to God even if we never receive one thing in return. We must keep our hearts right and guard against covetousness. At the same time, we need to realize that God does want us to have faith, expecting Him to meet our needs” (119, 120). Hagin also warns against 1) expecting a hundredfold on an earthy return from your giving and 2) giving into an “anointed” ministry to get out of debt. Hagin also writes against gimmicks for churches to get people’s money.

7 BALANCE AND SOUND TEACHING.....................................147

Hagin wonderfully promotes hermeneutics or good principles of interpreting and teaching the Bible; He outlines basic guidelines about teaching in a balanced way. He also goes into detail on what ministries one should and should not give to. If the ministry is unbalanced and mainly talks about money, is not spreading the Gospel, and multiplying ministers, do not give to that ministry. If the ministry is balanced in its teachings from the Word of God and is heavily spreading the Gospel and increasing workers for the harvest, then so into such a ministry.

8 TWENTY-FOUR PRINCIPLES FROM THE EPISTLES REGARDING MONEY, GIVING, AND RECEIVING................171

The following are the twenty-four principles from the epistles:
1. Believers are not able to give anything to God that did not originate with God.
2. Some believers operate in a special grace of giving.
3. Believers are called upon to be diligent in business.
4. Believers are called upon to be responsible toward their financial obligations.
5. Believers have a duty to minister financially to those who have spiritually blessed them.
6. Ministers have a right to be supported financially by their work in the ministry.
7. Love must motivate the believers giving.
8. Christians should practice consistent and systematic giving.
9. Giving is a grace that can be exercised in the midst of challenging circumstances. Giving is reflective of a life given to God and is rooted in the Person and example of the Lord Jesus Christ.
10. God wants all of us to do our part and to carry our weight in giving.
11. Ministers should be ethical and above reproach in their handling of church finances.
12. Paul clearly teaches the law of sowing and reaping.
13. Paul sought peoples hearts, not their money.
14. Paul was eager to give to the poor.
15. Paul and John encouraged Christian charity among the brethren.
16. Paul exemplified and taught a strong work ethic.
17. Paul advocated contentment and denounced covetousness.
18. Paul stressed the individuals responsibility to provide for his family.
19. Believers are not to love or trust in money.
20. Believers in the Early Church considered their material possessions of much less value than their faith.
21. Believers were strongly warned against favoritism and partiality based on wealth.
22. Exploitation of the poor by the rich is condemned.
23. Making merchandise of the saints by ministers is condemned.
24. God wants His children to prosper.

9 WALKING IN THE LIGHT.........................................................193

In this chapter, Hagin summarizes and concludes his book: “In this book, Ive shared some of the lessons Ive learned concerning biblical prosperity during my years of ministry. Ive tried to present a sound, practical, balanced approach to this important subject, basing everything Ive said on the solid foundation of the Word of God.
My purpose in writing this book is to provide a clear statement of the scriptural truths of prosperity—truths I believe with all my heart. By stating in a spirit of love what the Bible says is right and true, I hope to help all believers claim the precious promises of God and avoid the ditches of error, extremism, and confusion that lie on both sides of the road” (93).

My summary of the book: This is a very good book. Many pastors point-out that some preachers in the Word of Faith Movement preach greed and a financial- prosperity-centered-gospel. In this book, Hagin warns against this and declares that it is unbiblical and wrong. Hagin writes that preachers that only preach on money are not being balanced and that they need to also emphasis other doctrines. Hagin also humbly admits that, in the past, he has misinterpreted a Scripture passage on prosperity (122-126). Hagin emphasizes the need to read Scripture in context, and not to pull verses out of context to promote one’s own obscure teaching.

If you know a Bible teacher that needs help in preaching a balanced view of biblical prosperity, buy this book and give it to that person.

So, this list is just that. These are the 5 Bible verses on money that, even as I just scratch the surface of understanding them, have revolutionized my financial life.

Behold, these are the wicked; And always at ease, they have increased in wealth. The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! So that He sets on high those who are lowly, And those who mourn are lifted to safety. He who tills his land will have plenty of bread, But he who pursues worthless things lacks sense.

Last week my pastor asked me to teach the Wednesday night service at our church while he enjoyed himself at Bike Week in Florida. So I decided to talk about what I know best, which is biblical wealth and prosperity. If you'd like to see the video, scroll down to the middle of this post and watch the video of my teaching. Talking about wealth and prosperity in the church is one of those subjects that tend to get used and abused on a regular basis. On one hand there are some who teach that if you just believe hard enough , you can have all the wealth and prosperity you could ever want. On the other hand some preachers try to convince you that being wealthy, successful, and prosperous are something to be avoided- that the poorer you are, the more humble you are and the closer to God you become.
