AMAZING Facts About Our Solar System

Solar System Facts

There are many different types of objects found in the solar system: a star, planets, moons, dwarf planets, comets, asteroids, gas, and dust. In terms of the numbers of each of these objects, our current knowledge is as follows:. In terms of mass, the Sun comprises over All objects in the Solar System orbit the Sun; that is, they move around the Sun in elliptical paths. Moreover, the orbits of these objects lie roughly in the same plane, called the ecliptic plane. The mechanism that causes the orbit of objects in the Solar System is one of the fundamental forces in nature: gravity. Additionally, other objects in the Solar System are massive enough to exert gravitational forces significant enough to alter the orbit of smaller objects.

This allows us to look up at the sky and observe changes. The ancients noticed planets wandering across the sky, and occasional visitors such as comets. Thousands of years ago, most thought the stars ruled our destiny. Today, however, we can see science at work in the planets, asteroids and comets close to home. So why take a look at the Solar System? What can it teach us? Goes to show you the Solar System requires more study to figure this out.

The solar system is a bizarre place with its alien planets, mysterious moons and strange phenomena that are so out-of-this-world they elude.

20+ Incredible Space Facts That Aren't In Textbooks

Photo courtesy of NASA. Despite being the second planet from the sun, Venus' atmospheric thickness and composition make its average temperature about degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 75 degrees warmer than the highest temperature on Mercury, the closest planet to the sun. With a diameter of just over 1, miles, the dwarf planet is considerably smaller than the United States, where the greatest distance between two mainland points within contiguous states is 2, miles from Point Arena, Calif. All of the larger planets including Jupiter, Neptune and Uranus have rings , but they are difficult to see because of distance. The largest planet of the solar system uses its powerful magnetic field to attract space debris and other dangerous objects into its orbit, thus shielding other planets. The winds of Neptune can travel at more than 1, mph , which is the maximum speed of a Lockheed Martin F jet fighter.
