Simon and Garfunkels Greatest Hits by Paul SimonAs greatest hits collections go, this is about as good as it gets. The best songs penned by Paul Simon rank among the greatest in the history of pop music. America. The Boxer. Sounds Of Silence. Bridge Over Troubled Water. The blended harmony of the voices of Simon and Garfunkel are both unique and exquisite. And best of all, the music is timeless. The only complaint with this set is the in-between song sound effects. In various spots, the songs are given a live audience to studio recordings with cheering and applause at the end. Surely these classics could have been left alone and presented as originally intended. The cheering crowds dont add anything to these otherwise brilliant tracks. But for songwriting and performance excellence, there arent many compilations better than this one.
Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits
Why bother to review an anthology of such familiar material? In this case, it seems to me that Simon and Garfunkel deserve particular homage for their quiet but extraordinary accomplishment during the late Sixties — especially since there was a definite reaction against them. Perhaps it was simply that they became too popular, embraced by the middle class, praised by The New Yorker, and apotheosized by The Graduate. At a time when it was hip to drop out and blow your mind, when the rhetoric of protest escalated into the rhetoric of revolution, when the communal idea began to spread, Simon and Garfunkel suddenly seemed old hat, even reactionary, to many people. There was no cryptic psychedelia buried in their records. Nor did Simon and Garfunkel ever invoke sensuality.

Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits
Four years after Simon and Garfunkel's summer tour was called off due to Art Garfunkel's vocal cord paresis, the tall singer has announced that he has healed and is hitting the road. There's no word whether Simon and Garfunkel plan on rebooking their cancelled shows, though, and Paul Simon is already spending his spring on the road with Sting. On that note, we asked our readers to select their favorite Simon and Garfunkel songs. Here are the results. This beautiful album cut from Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme was a b-side to "A Hazy Shade of Winter" and didn't get a lot of attention when it first came out, but over the years, fans have recognized it as one of the duo's sweestest love songs.
The album is currently available on CD under Legacy 's Playlist banner. The album was a mix of original studio recordings and four previously unreleased live recordings. The album's minimalist packaging does not specifically date the latter; however, the live versions of "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her" and " Kathy's Song " included on Greatest Hits were also included on the album Live The liner notes to Live state that these two songs were both recorded at a November concert in St. Louis, Missouri. According to the liner notes from Collected Works , however, the version of "Kathy's Song" was taken from a concert in Vermont. A live version of "Homeward Bound" was also included on the album.
Columbia might have gone years longer without compiling the duo's hits, but then, in June of , Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel did something totally unexpected -- in the midst of Simon 's still-emerging solo career and the careful crafting of his identity as a single act , and Garfunkel 's re-identification of himself as an actor, the two reunited for one night, to do a benefit performance at New York's Madison Square Garden for the presidential candidacy of Senator George McGovern. The performance was widely publicized, both before and after the event -- McGovern had captured the hearts and imaginations of tens of millions of high school and college students around the United States that spring, and this reviewer can attest to the fact that millions of people who were not at that show felt like they were there in spirit. The fact that they were present as excellent live performances made the appeal of this record irresistible to fans at every level, from the most casual to the most serious and dedicated. It was a sign of just how much they were loved and missed and, perhaps, needed? And a couple of years later, it joined their original five albums as a perennial catalog favorite.
