Pride and Prejudice

She is the daughter of Mr. The family lives in Hertfordshire at the estate of Longbourn, near the town of Meryton. The novel primarily focuses on Elizabeth's evolving relationship with Fitzwilliam Darcy. Elizabeth is not as excited as her mother or her sisters when Mrs. Bennet learns that wealthy bachelor Charles Bingley has purchased Netherfield , one of the great estates near Meryton. Bingley arrives, he expresses an interest in Jane, which delights Elizabeth.

The Bennet family are a fictional family of dwindling Hertfordshire landed gentry , created by English novelist Jane Austen. The family plays a central role in the novel Pride and Prejudice , as it is the protagonist, Elizabeth's family. The complex relationships between its various members influence the evolution of the plot. The family belong to a society where marriage is the only possible future for a young girl of good family. Yet the Bennet couple do not assume their role as educators: the mother repeatedly makes a spectacle of herself, who doesn't seem to realise that her behaviour is more likely to put off any rich, eligible young man. All the while, the father , who seems to be an indifferent husband, has long-since given up on reining in his wife's behaviour, more intent on 'enjoying the show' than in correcting her behaviour, and the behaviour of his younger daughters. These girls show very different behaviors according to the education they received or provided themselves.

Pride and Prejudice is an romantic novel of manners written by Jane Austen. The novel follows the character development of Elizabeth Bennet , the dynamic protagonist of the book, who learns about the repercussions of hasty judgments and eventually comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness. A classic piece filled with comedy, its humour lies in its honest depiction of manners, education, marriage and money during the Regency era in Great Britain. Mr Bennet of Longbourn estate has five daughters, but because his property is entailed it can only be passed from male heir to male heir. Consequently, Mr Bennet's family will be destitute upon his death. Because his wife also lacks an inheritance, it is imperative that at least one of the girls marry well to support the others upon his death, which is a motivation that drives the plot. Jane Austen's opening line--"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife"—is a sentence filled with irony and sets the tone for the book.
