The Twelve Olympians
By deTraci Regula. The Greeks didn't have a "Top Ten" list of deities - but they did have the "Top Twelve" - those lucky Greek gods and goddesses living on top of Mount Olympus. Aphrodite - Goddess of love, romance, and beauty. Her son was Eros, god of Love though he is not an Olympian. Apollo - Beautiful god of the sun, light, medicine, and music. Ares - Dark god of war who loves Aphrodite , goddess of love and beauty.
Aphrodite was the goddess of love, sex, and beauty. Unsurprisingly for a love goddess, she was said to have emerged from the foam generated when the severed testicles of her father, Uranus, were thrown into the sea by his son, the Titan Cronus. Or is that surprising? Athena was the goddess of reason, wisdom, and war. She famously sprung fully formed from the forehead of Zeus.

The ancient Greek mystical world was ruled by a small group of powerful gods called the Olympians. When things had to be decided, this council of 12 gods met on Mount Olympus to discuss things. The 12 Olympian gods all kept a home on Mount Olympus. Unless they were off traveling somewhere, that's where you could find most of them. Hades preferred his home in the Underworld. Poseidon preferred his palace under the sea. But the rest of the Olympians lived on Mount Olympus year around.
Zeus, the god of the sky and thunder was the most powerful of the Twelve Olympians who recognized him as their king. He was the son of Cronus, the king of the Titans and his wife and sister Rhea who saved baby Zeus from being devoured by his father by giving Cronus a stone that was wrapped in swaddling clothes. After growing up, Zeus overthrew his father and started a new pantheon of deities with the Olympians as the chief gods and goddesses. He was married to his sister Hera with whom he had several children. Leto, another Zeus lover was barred from giving birth to Apollo and Artemis on land.
