Islam and freedom of expression
Freedom of Expression in Islam by Mohammad Hashim KamaliIn recent years the subject of freedom of expression has become a topic of heated debate. Freedom of Expression in Islam offers the first and only detailed presentation in English of freedom of expression from both the legal and moral perspectives of Islam. This work is a pioneering attempt in examining both the evidence on freedom of expression in the sources of the Shariah and the limitations, whether moral, legal or theological, that Islam imposes on the valid exercise of this freedom. Freedom of Expression in Islam is informative not only on the subject of the possibilities of freedom of expression within Islam, but also on the cultural tradition of Islam and its guidelines on social behaviour. Freedom of Expression in Islam is part of a series dedicated to the fundamental rights and liberties in Islam and should be read in conjunction with The Dignity of Man: An Islamic Perspective and Freedom, Equality and Justice in Islam.

I recently watched a curious debate that took place in at the Free Press Society of Denmark. On the other side was Flemming Rose, the journalist who angered many Muslims in by publishing cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. The crux of the debate was what to do with Muslims and Islam in Europe. Wilders argued that the Quran must be banned and mosques must be shut down. Rose, in contrast, explained that this view is unacceptably authoritarian, and Muslims deserve freedom like everyone else.
Sharia law is a term that often invokes fear in America. There is a fear that Sharia law is creeping into American government and will eventually overrule the constitution itself. Islam, Sharia, and Muslims are often viewed as the enemies of freedom, particularly free speech. On the other hand, Western countries are understood to be committed to free speech. Several states have sought to ban Sharia law altogether and some politicians have suggested that Muslims be have suggested that Muslims should be asked about whether they support Sharia law prior to entering the country or participating in government. In , the presidential candidate Ben Carson was asked if the Bible has authority over the constitution.
This view completely contradicts Islam. Narrated by Abu Hurayra. According to Islamic law , it is a criminal offense to speak ill of Islam , its Prophet , and its holy Scriptures Qur'an and Hadith. Blasphemy is punishable by death. Apostasy can be committed in two ways: 1 by uttering expressly by tongue that he is or has become a Mushrik , a polytheist i. These acts would be blasphemous and constitute apostasy.
