Free weight squats Verses Smith machine

There are advantages and disadvantages to both power racks and Smith machines.. Here's how you tell the difference between them.

Free Weight Squat vs Smith Machine Squat

Choosing to do a squat exercise in a power rack versus a Smith machine may seem inconsequential as they appear to be similar pieces of workout equipment. They both are large weightlifting racks that hold an Olympic barbell. Although you can do many of the same exercises on both machines, they have distinct functions and designs, each with benefits and drawbacks. A Smith machine consists of two vertical posts and a small, rectangular base. A barbell attaches to two guidepost rods that run parallel to the main support posts. Holes are set into the main posts at even intervals, allowing you to lock the barbell at any point in the movement by simply twisting the bar forward. A power rack is a large metal cage with horizontal bars that you can set at various heights.

A Smith machine consists of a barbell that is fixed within steel rails, allowing only vertical movement. A Smith machine often includes a weight rack in the base to help stabilise it. Some Smith machines have the barbell counterbalanced.
