Who Was Marie Curie? by Megan Stine

Born in Warsaw, Poland, on November 7, 1867, Marie Curie was forbidden to attend the male-only University of Warsaw, so she enrolled at the Sorbonne in Paris to study physics and mathematics. There she met a professor named Pierre Curie, and the two soon married, forming one of the most famous scientific partnerships in history. Together they discovered two elements and won a Nobel Prize in 1903. (Later Marie won another Nobel award for chemistry in 1911.) She died in Savoy, France, on July 4, 1934, a victim of many years of exposure to toxic radiation.

Pioneers of the periodic table

Most of the rest of the names of the elements are derived from various chemical or physical properties:. John Emsley, The Elements , 3rd edition. Derivation of Name and Symbol. Named after the American continent, since the element above it in the lanthanide series was named after Europe. Named after the Greek word for the arsenic-containing mineral orpiment, arsenikon ; this name was derived from the Arabic word zarnik. Greek: barys , "heavy" in reference to the high density of some barium minerals.

While Mendeleev was never awarded the Nobel Prize he was nominated in , and his work paved the way for many other laureates who went onto be recognised for their elemental discoveries. Glenn T. Seaborg standing in front of the periodic table with the ion exchanger illusion column of actnide elements, 19 May The discovery of plutonium followed that of neptunium, and would open the door to the transuranium elements — those that come after uranium in the periodic table. However Seaborg and McMillan were far from the first Nobel Laureates to be recognised for their work in discovering elements — pure substances composed of just one type of atom.

How the Chemical Elements Were Named

Today in History: Pierre and Marie Curie discovered Radium in 1898

Below is the list of people whose names are used in chemical element names. Of the chemical elements , 19 are connected with the names of 20 people. Four other elements have indirect connection to the names of non-scientists. The following 19 elements are connected to the names of people. Seaborg and Oganessian were the only two who were alive at the time of being honored with having elements named after them. The four non-scientists in this table are connected with elements that were not named to honor the individual directly, but rather were named for a place or thing which in turn had been named for these people. Samarium was named for the mineral samarskite from which it was isolated.
