Hugo and nebula winners 2017
Hugo & Nebula Awards: Best Novels Group (509 Members)This group is for like-minded people who want to read all of the Hugo and Nebula winners and runners-up.
The Hugo Awards are chosen by the fans. The Nebula Awards are chosen by science fiction writers. A lot of the books overlap, but not all. The Nebula awards started in 1966. Many people believe that the Nebula awards are more prestigious due to it being writers judging writers. The Hugo awards (Originally called the World Science Fiction Society until 1992) have been giving out awards since 1953.
As of the end of 2017, there are:
- 71 Hugo Winners
- 279 Hugo Runners Up (Dune World by Frank Herbert is not in the list)
- 53 Nebula Winners
- 283 Nebula Runners Up
This will be an adult only group, mostly because we dont want to censor ourselves and because a few of the books on the list are not appropriate for children and we dont fancy trying to explain incest, murder, and the meaning of life to random children.
This group was established on 2/8/2018.

Writing about books, hiking, the Battle of Tarawa and more. For science-fiction geeks only. Because I wanted to, I wasted several hours rating the Hugo and Nebula-award winning novels, from top to bottom. Totally subjective, inconsistent, and really long , but I find sometimes that I like reading a list like this, so I did one myself. My biases seem fairly clear after this exercise. Not a huge fan of 21st-century winners, with exceptions. And something in me clearly still rebels at giving these awards to fantasy novels, unless they are truly innovative.

The Obelisk is headline winner in a year marked by diminished presence of conservative Sad Puppy lobby and strong showing from women.

If you had any doubts Jemisin is changing science fiction, as Arthur C. Le Guin did before her, this is your wake up call. Unfortunately, despite solid reviews and a passionate defense from Ursula K. Set in a future Earth far removed from a nuclear apocalypse, where society has rebuilt itself along completely different lines, the main character is a healer who specializes in snake venom and other bioengineered techniques. Let me say first — I do not actually put a lot of stock into critical awards. The choice of the winner usually comes about through political machinations that seriously turn me off. And it does offer a certain lens on the past to see which books critics elevated in the past versus the present. So, after looking around, I quickly settled on the Hugo and Nebula awards for my choices. They are probably the most prestigious awards given in my favorite genres science fiction and fantasy.
