Misia: The Life of Misia Sert by Arthur Gold

Duo pianists Arthur Gold and Robert Fizdale have written a charming and magnificent biography of a truly extraordinary woman, Misia Sert. Born into a Polish family of gifted artists, Misia was a pianist of talent who, as a child, delighted Liszt and, later, her teacher, Fauré. Her greatest talent, however, was the gift of inspiring and bringing together others. She was painted and adored by Renoir, Vuillard, Bonnard, and Toulouse-Lautrec. She was a friend of Mallarmé and Valéry, and later, Cocteau, Colette and Claudel. It was she who brought Diaghilev and Stravinsky together, inspired two characters in Prousts masterpiece Remembrance of Things Past, and discovered Coco Chanel.

Misia, Queen of Paris, At The Musee D'Orsay

O ver the course of her unusual and long life, Misia Sert achieved something truly rare: a kind of immortality. Petersburg , where her father, Polish sculptor Cyprien Godebski, was working on a reconstruction project. Her mother died in childbirth, leaving Godebski to raise her. Throughout her childhood, Misia played piano, sometimes while sitting on the lap of Franz Lizst, a family friend. She would go on to teach piano lessons in Paris. Her passion for the arts was far broader and deeper, and her interest in surrounding herself with the creative luminaries of the day was powerful. Few who knew her accused her of feigning interest in the arts simply to get close to famous artists.

That's why I LOVE the story of Misia Sert and Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel. When they met each other, during a dinner party in , that was it. “I love your coat,”.

They found out they had a lot in common: a lethal wit, a love of gossip, and youths spent in a monestary. Misia would later claim that she had suggested that Coco try perfumes. We all know what happened next: the creation of Chanel No. They would go on crazy road trips together, like Thelma and Louise avant la lettre , causing scandal everywhere they went. Were they lovers?
