The Holy Grail. What is it? Today, you can call something the Holy Grail of fill-in-the-blank. You can fill in any field here, and the Holy Grail of it means something that is very hard to find but is highly valuable in that field. Red diamonds are the rarest and may be called the Holy Grail of jewels or diamonds. It is relatively difficult to grow and hard to find, so we might call it the Holy Grail of peppers.

The Holy Grail is a treasure that serves as an important motif in Arthurian literature. Different traditions describe it as a cup, dish or stone with miraculous powers that provide happiness, eternal youth or sustenance in infinite abundance, often in the custody of the Fisher King. The term "holy grail" is often used to denote an elusive object or goal that is sought after for its great significance. In the late 12th century, Robert de Boron wrote in Joseph d'Arimathie that the Grail was Jesus 's vessel from the Last Supper , which Joseph of Arimathea used to catch Christ's blood at the crucifixion. Grail literature divides into two classes. The first concerns King Arthur's knights visiting the Grail castle or questing after the object.

The Round Table is King Arthur 's famed table in the Arthurian legend , around which he and his knights congregate. As its name suggests, it has no head, implying that everyone who sits there has equal status. The table was first described in by Wace , who relied on previous depictions of Arthur's fabulous retinue. The symbolism of the Round Table developed over time; by the close of the 12th century it had come to represent the chivalric order associated with Arthur's court, the Knights of the Round Table.
