Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Recovering The Converter Scene

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Part of me liked to imagine that the rest of the country was on the same page. Dunkirk had the benefit of a director with a strong and passionate following that would follow him into any near-wordless WWII passion project. When I happened to catch the Valerian trailer before a packed Friday-night showing among Brooklyn civilians, there were derisive, utterly unenchanted snickers as soon as its promotional bombast had faded. Basically, films of the scale and ambition of a Star Wars or Marvel release without the brand power. That task has become a huge risk in our familiar, if flagging, franchise landscape. There are two ways to make people feel comfortable about science fiction and fantasy: brand loyalty and humor.

Besson independently crowd-sourced and personally funded the film. In the 28th century, due to cooperation between the Earth's countries beginning with the ASTP of and extraterrestrial peoples, the former International Space Station has been expanded until its mass threatens to cause it to fall out of orbit. Relocated to deep space using thrusters, it becomes Alpha, a space-traveling city inhabited by millions of species from thousands of planets. A special police division is created by the United Human Federation a world government formed by a federation of Earth's countries to preserve peace through the galaxy, including happy-go-lucky Major Valerian and his partner, no-nonsense Sergeant Laureline. They fish for pearls containing enormous amounts of energy, and use small animals to replicate them. Wreckage begins plummeting from the sky, followed by a huge spacecraft that falls and causes an explosion that annihilates every living being on the planet. Just before her death, she conveys a telepathic message.
