Reframing : Neuro-Linguistic Programming and the Transformation of Meaning
Choosing a frame for a picture requires much thought. The right frame can add a certain je ne sai quois that elevates the picture above the ordinary and draws our minds into the realm of the sublime. In contrast, the wrong frame can ruin the splendor of a masterpiece and reduce it to the ranks of something one wants to shut away in the basement on account of how depressing it is to look at. Just as a frame enhances or detracts from our appreciation of a picture, the frames of reference we put around the events and experiences in our lives can either limit or broaden our perceptions of them. They can cramp our style or open us up to all the possibilities life has to offer. We and, if we allow them, others are continually setting different frames formed by our beliefs, perceived role in life, likes and dislikes, our skills or lack thereof, social boundaries, and so on without any real thought about whether these frames are right or not.
