Thomas, James and the Red Balloon by Wilbert Awdry

Wilbert Vere Awdry, OBE, better known as the Rev. W. Awdry, was an English clergyman, railway enthusiast and childrens author, and creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, who starred in Awdrys acclaimed Railway Series.

The characters that would make Awdry famous, and the first stories featuring them, were invented in 1943 to amuse his son Christopher during a bout of measles. The first book (The Three Railway Engines) was published in 1945, and by the time Awdry stopped writing in 1972, The Railway Series numbered 26 books. Christopher subsequently added further books to the series.

Thomas & Friends UK: The Red Balloon

How do we work to solve the issue of people talking through gigs, artists feeling undermined? But where the balloon analogy stops is there… as this is not just an idealistic outlook full of hot air. Red Balloon Music has a sustained track record of delivering distinct, exciting content to enthused audiences across Manchester — and a stand-out feature: it is curated with care. This is my attempt to re-address the frustrations which many music-goers myself included have felt from watching shows where the audience constantly talk over the acts who are playing. And now, almost 10 years later, Mark is once again playing a headline show for me at The Bridgewater Hall on Saturday 30th June. Many nights in the city concentrate only on established acts, but as a music lover myself, I quickly realised the need to give less-established acts a chance to perform outside of the open-mic pub circuit.

James and the Red Balloon is the fifteenth episode of the sixth series. It is summer holiday time on the Sodor and holidaymakers are coming to visit the island. Thomas picks up a special to take to Dryaw Airfield; he tells Percy it is a balloon which Percy thinks it is a party balloon, but Thomas corrects him, saying that it is a special balloon and chuffs away. James arrives and Thomas explains that the balloon is for taking holidaymakers around the island, but James is jealous because taking holidaymakers is a job for engines. He asks what will happen if the balloon takes their passengers and what will become of them. After hearing this, Thomas is not excited about the balloon anymore.
