Beauty and the beast childrens story
Beauty and the Beast by Marianna MayerFour and a half stars. Lovely book. Nice illustrations from Mercer Mayer, who may be better known for his Little Critter books. These illustrations have an entirely different feel. My older son noticed an Egyptian motif theme in the illustrations: statue of Ra on the palace gate, scarab beetle in the black horses halter, Horuss statue in the garden with hieroglyphs on the base, Anubis carved into the chair backs in the dining room, a sphinx in the palace hall, along with cartouches carved on the balcony and pharaoh-masks on the pillar. Beauty is shown wearing a scarab beetle brooch and ring. I am not sure why the Egyptian theme appears in Beauty and the Beast, but if Mercer Mayer is as taken with Egyptian designs and artwork as my son, then that explains it.

Is it time to rewrite fairy tales?
At a dinner party in a sparkling penthouse the host suddenly takes ill; imagining himself covered in insects, he flings himself out the window in terror. Only things are not what they seem, and when the butler appears to die of fright in custody, she is left with the growing suspicion that dark arts of some kind are involved. She turns for help to the oh-so-obvious Villain of the Week, a professor specializing in folk magic. Ross, Cliff De Young is a terrible actor. The whole thing underlines how much this plot device needed to be put to rest permanently. The show could use a sense of the supernatural, but not like this.

Here we cast our minds back to the aristocratic salons of 17 th century France. In this original novella length tale, the back-story of both Belle and the Beast is given. The Beast was a young prince who lost his father, and whose mother had to wage war to defend his kingdom. The queen left him in care of an evil fairy, who tried to seduce him when he became an adult; when he refused, she transformed him into a beast. Beaumont pared down the list of characters of Beauty and Beast and simplified the tale to transform it into a quintessential fairy tale. It is thought by some scholars that Beauty and the Beast story may have a much longer history. It could be that it has roots in the tale of Cupid and Psyche, t he ancient chronicle from the Latin novel Metamorphoses.
