The Best Places to See on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast

Marino Ballena National Park protects acres of land and 13, acres of ocean — primarily to protect a coral reef and the migrating whales that gather offshore from December to April. One of the biggest draws has to be watching humpback whales which frequent the coast, often getting close enough to boats to be touched! Arco Beach is located directly next to Ballena Beach, but only accessible at low tide. Walk along this seemingly endless sand beach without passing another human being. Ballena Beach requires an access fee. Uvita Beach is the perfect place to relax in a hammock — with only the crashing waves as background noise.

Please refresh the page and retry. T ucked into the narrow bridge of Central America, Costa Rica has not one, but two stunning coastlines. To the east, the warm Caribbean Sea shelters coral reefs and tropical fish and its sands are where four different species of turtle — the endangered green turtle, the loggerhead, leatherback and hawksbill — lay their eggs each year.

Here you can go trekking at high altitudes, search for rare resplendent quetzals and straddle your feet across the continental divide. The national park offers a number of excellent trails and the region is dotted with natural hot springs that definitely merit a visit. Here you can watch all manner of monkeys bounding through the forest canopy as you take leisurely hikes along palm-fringed shores lapped by tropical waves. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is where you can feast on coconut-scented rice and spice-rubbed jerk chicken, then burn off the calories while dancing the night away to reggae beats. From the safety and comfort of your own canoe, you can paddle along these shrouded waterways in search of hidden wildlife. The tiny town of Turrialba in the Central Valley might not look like much on the map, but the surrounding area is home to some of the most intense white-water rafting in the whole of Central America.

Sunny days, awesome surf and stunning beaches are three ways that best describe the North Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Entirely encompassed by Guanacaste province , this part of the country is the most visited, yet it is also one of the least populated parts of Costa Rica. Among the best and most easily accessible diving sites in the country, the North Pacific Coast has an abundance of marine life, especially around the Isla Santa Catalina area, Playas del Coco and Playa Ocotal. Today, areas like Tamarindo are also becoming increasingly popular and little fishing villages are exploding all over the place, with more and more foreigners wanting to move here to find a piece of paradise. The beaches in the North Pacific Coast are some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire country.

Costa Rica is one of the most visited countries in Central America. Located on the Caribbean coast near Panama , Puerto Viejo is popular with young people and backpackers because of its great beaches, surfing, and party atmosphere. There are also many quiet beach hotels around for those who are looking for some peace and quiet. There is also a jaguar rescue center nearby that rehabilitates all sorts of local wildlife and releases them back into the wild. Cahuita, a tiny town situated right next to a stunning national park with the same name, is about an hour north of Puerto Viejo.
