Dream a Little Dream of Me: The Life of Cass Elliot by Eddi FiegelThis insightful biography examines the life and music of Cass Elliot—better known as Mama Cass—the instantly recognizable face of the Mamas and the Papas. Untangling the truth about Casss life, this book follows her development from her misfit teenage years to her role in the folk boom of the early 1960s. How Cass came to join the Mamas and the Papas, and the mix of love, hurt, and betrayal that fractured relationships within the group is central to the story as Cass is driven to strike out on a successful solo career. This account reveals the considerable unhappiness Cass experienced that was hidden by her jovial facade—her unrequited love for Papa Denny Doherty, her unhappy marriages and affairs, and her tragic death at age 32. Featuring interviews with many of Casss close friends, colleagues, and relatives, this account explores the woman behind the uniquely tender voice that dominated the Mamas and the Papass timeless hits like California Dreamin and Monday, Monday. Her charisma, wit, charm, and psychedelic persona marked her as a pop star who refused to conform to traditional female stereotypes and became a success on her own terms.

Album version: [You keep pouring into one glass and you're never changing the straw] Single version: [And now to sing this lovely ballad, here is Mama Cass] Stars shining bright above you Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you" Birds singin' in the sycamore tree Dream a little dream of me Say "nighty-night" and kiss me Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me While I'm alone and blue as can be Dream a little dream of me Stars fading but I linger on, dear Still craving your kiss I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear Just saying this Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you But in your dreams, whatever they be Dream a little dream of me Stars fading but I linger on, dear Still craving your kiss I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear Just saying this Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you Sweet dreams that leave all worries far behind you But in your dreams, whatever they be Dream a little dream of me. The group had often sung the song for fun, having been familiarized with it by member Michelle Phillips , whose father had been friends with the song's co-writer, Fabian Andre, in Mexico City where Michelle Phillips' family had resided when she was a young girl. According to him she was unhappy while recording the song, objecting to its campiness. However, Elliot herself would later tell Melody Maker : "I tried to sing it like it was and somebody had just come in and said, 'Here's a new song. In the album version, recorded with the Mamas and the Papas, a spoken introduction from an engineer is heard mentioning a drink, and then concluding with the words: "And now, to sing a lovely ballad, here is Mama Cass". Only the last part was heard on the single version of the song.
