The New World Order is not so much a single plot as a way of reading history. In the modern version, the New World Order hides in plain sight, a Mad Libs—style metastory about how the free people of the West have begun to willingly, blindly surrender ourselves to our coming totalitarian overlords. Davison publishes The Profound Revolution, a manifesto of sorts positing that the New World Order hides in plain sight and detailing how real-life institutions like the Federal Reserve, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the U. In , the conservative commentator Gary Allen publishes None Dare Call It Conspiracy —prefaced by California congressman John Schmitz—which extends the paranoia to deficit spending and basic banking, offering tales of how organizations like the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission carry forth the economic agenda of an invisible, global power elite. It sells 5 million copies. The book—which begins with the passage of gun-control legislation—will become a holy text of the paranoid, racist right.
Looking out upon the horrid ruin we seem to have made of the planet, in spite of the kind hearts and good intentions of the vast majority of human beings, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that some nefarious force has hijacked civilization, driving it towards ends that serve almost no one. If we are headed for a future that no one would consciously choose, it stands to reason, some say, that we are not choosing; that something else, unfriendly to human welfare, is choosing for us. Deeper study of certain pivotal events in history strengthens this conclusion. Ominous coincidences pile up and make patterns, pointing toward a conscious agency orchestrating these events toward sinister goals. Diving deeper, one discovers patterns of patterns that ultimately coalesce into an alternate history of the world. The alternate history explains world events as resulting from the machinations of a powerful, dark cabal of secret organizations comprising the global elite: the banks, wealthy families like the Rockefellers and Rothschilds, non-official organizations like the Bilderburg Council, organized crime, shadowy agencies within the government, secret societies like Skull and Bones and the Freemasons, and so on.
The New World Order or NWO is claimed to be an emerging clandestine totalitarian world government by various conspiracy theories. The common theme in conspiracy theories about a New World Order is that a secretive power elite with a globalist agenda is conspiring to eventually rule the world through an authoritarian world government—which will replace sovereign nation-states —and an all-encompassing propaganda whose ideology hails the establishment of the New World Order as the culmination of history's progress. Many influential historical and contemporary figures have therefore been purported to be part of a cabal that operates through many front organizations to orchestrate significant political and financial events, ranging from causing systemic crises to pushing through controversial policies , at both national and international levels, as steps in an ongoing plot to achieve world domination. Before the early s, New World Order conspiracism was limited to two American countercultures, primarily the militantly anti-government right and secondarily that part of fundamentalist Christianity concerned with the end-time emergence of the Antichrist. During the 20th century, political figures such as Woodrow Wilson and Winston Churchill used the term " new world order " to refer to a new period of history characterised by a dramatic change in world political thought and in the global balance of power after World War I and World War II.
New World Order may refer to: New World Order (conspiracy theory), a conspiracy theory a science fiction novel by Ben Jeapes; The New World Order: Facts & Fiction, a book by Mark Dice analyzing NWO conspiracy theories.
