Journey to the West (Monkey) – Book Review

My somersault cloud has outstanding magical powers. I know how to conceal myself and vanish. I can make spells and end them. I can reach the sky and find my way into the earth. I can travel under the sun or moon without leaving a shadow or go through metal or stone freely. Cartoon monkeys grin from every door and prance across every shop window.

This international spotlight has at times been particularly welcome for writers outside the Anglophone and Western European publishing centers that still dominate our understanding of world literature. And given how little-known many of the masterpieces of the Imperial Chinese literary canon are to Western readers, the Los Angeles Review of Books asked me to nominate one preth-century work or writer deserving of the Nobel publicity boost.

So let's get super geeky today because I have to talk about this book. Not enough people have read it, at least here in the West no pun intended. Yu in In my opinion, the poems are amazing and needed. This was written in the s my friends.

A tale of Buddhism, adventure, culture and Chinese mythology, Journey To The West tells the fictional account of a pilgrimage undertaken by the Buddhist monk Xuanzang, also known as Prince Tripitaka, to retrieve sacred scrolls from India. On his journey Xuanzang is appointed three unruly disciples by Buddha in the form of the greedy pig beast Pigsy, the river monster Sandy and his most valuable disciple Monkey. Hatched from a stone egg when the Earth was still young and granted the secrets of heaven and earth, the mischievous and irrepressible Monkey rides on clouds, can turn invisible and transform into any other shape. Along his journey, Xuanzang rides a white horse that is a Dragon Prince who has promised to keep him going on his journey. The novel is not only an entertaining and amusing story with slapstick elements, but an enlightening one too. Giving the reader a spiritual insight, the novel is about the journey an individual takes towards enlightenment and finding peace within himself.
