On the other side of the world, an old spy hides from his past. Once, he was a man of action: so dedicated to the cause that he abandoned his baby daughter to keep his cover. Now the only thing he lives for is swimming in the local pool.
Then, on Christmas eve, Klara is thrown into a terrifying chase through Europe. Only the Swimmer can save her. But time is running out...
Joakim Zander talks about his debut novel, The Swimmer
His word choices and sentence structure pull the reader into his scenes and hold him there, turning the page, and the next, and the next. It is clear that he ponders over every word, every phrase, every sentence. The words he chooses are designed to paint a specific picture; it might be one of conflict, or pain, or anger, or deceit, but Zander has used all the right pigments on his chosen canvas to create the suspense and tension needed for a thriller. His word choices give him the ability to create tension and conflict within and among his characters, leaving the reader with a strong desire to know what will happen next. Perhaps it is that The Swimmer is more character-focused than story-focused. Their strengths and weaknesses are clearly spelled out, and he provides a rich visual description of each. A weakness within his character study, however, is his choice of protagonist and antagonist.

Share on:. On a remote Swedish island, a little girl, Klara, grows up without a father. Now, twenty years later, she discovers a secret: a secret that powerful men will kill to keep hidden. The Swimmer begins in , with a bombing in Damascus, and a tragedy that can be felt across decades. After an explosive start, we are gently introduced to Mahmoud Shammosh, a Ph. D student in Sweden, Klara Walldeen, a Swedish girl working in Brussels, George Loow, a young lobbyist, and, of course, the swimmer, who wants nothing more than to atone for the past. The characters are intriguing, full of their own secrets, and those of others.
