City on Fire is an unforgettable novel about love and betrayal and forgiveness, about art and truth and rock n roll, about what people need from each other in order to live... and about what makes the living worth doing in the first place.

Youth in Revolt

Locating the best of times within the worst of times is no mean trick, especially in a historical novel where the history is recent enough that many readers remember firsthand just how bad those times were. Yet humanity keeps bubbling up amid the ruins. You could go hear the early rap records or the late New Wave ones or the thing disco was becoming at unlicensed clubs where black and brown and white and gay and straight still mixed openly.

The most respected critics in the US have now lined up to give it their blessing. This optimism had sputtered out by chapter two. Then there are the other pages. Two hundred of those pages should simply have been cut from the book. Almost all long books have their longueurs — few readers are riveted by every single page of War and Peace — but here, the slow passages are not just slow, but stonily inert.

It is Hallberg's first published novel. City on Fire received a mixed reception from critics. On the other hand, Elisabeth Vincentelli of the New York Post called it "overhyped" and, more incendiously, "a steaming pile of literary dung. The book-buying public isn't so easily swindled: "City on Fire" lingers at No. At The Guardian , Sandra Newman echoed the sentiment of overhype, calling it "a debut of remarkable promise, rather than as the masterpiece that fulfills that promise. The thousand pages took seven years to write. Hallberg, a widely published literary critic, offers breadth and depth in his reviews, and references flitting from Watchmen to Don DeLillo to James Wood. In another review , he pointed out the literary antecedents of various characters on Downton Abbey. Hallberg has even acknowledged that City on Fire was influenced by the sprawling HBO show The Wire , whose five seasons each focused on a different stratum of Baltimore life. Certainly, the superficial connections are there: Set in s New York City, the novel is about urban decay, drug addiction, and honor-bound but emotionally flawed detectives. Still, the structural similarities go deeper.
