A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

A grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door.

Meet Ove. Hes a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him the bitter neighbor from hell, but must Ove be bitter just because he doesnt walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?

Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Oves mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents association to their very foundations.

After living a long and colorful life, Allan Karlsson finds himself stuck in a nursing home. On his th birthday, he leaps out a window and begins an unexpected journey. While both participating in a production of "Death of a Salesman," a teacher's wife is assaulted in her new home, which leaves him determined to find the perpetrator over his wife's traumatized objections. Filip and Fredrik travels the world for different experiences but often ends up in rather odd places.

The script lets us know early on that we will be prodded towards the handkerchief. The grumpy, anal Ove Rolf Lassgard most of the time is living miserably in a neat, if bland, Swedish suburb. He is recently widowed and, as more early hints let on, his wife endured an accident some time before she died. Flashbacks clarify that — like Greer Garson in Goodbye Mr Chips — she carried the spark that illuminated his dusty soul. He is obsessed with trains and the superiority of Saab motorcars. She laughed her way through the funnier bits of The Master and the Margarita.

These forces take the guise of a much younger person who provides a sense of purpose for the old hero. But all movies are manipulative by default; the effectiveness of that manipulation is the more valid measurement to inspect. His failures of self-annihilation are due more to bad timing than botched attempts—he is constantly interrupted by neighbors or some distracting event going on in his housing complex. Priding himself on his reliability, Ove feels compelled to stop killing himself to address each interruption. That is presented as real, understandable pain.
