Operation Christmas Child: A Story of Simple Gifts by Franklin Graham

It was a simple idea that became the worldwide ministry of Operation Christmas Child—to minister to children in war-torn and famine-stricken countries.  In just two decades it has inspired everyday people to provide more than 100 million gift-filled shoeboxes to needy children in 130 countries. This beautiful book weaves the moving, God-saturated story of the ministry’s beginning with the soul-stirring, Christ exalting stories of lives that have been forever changed by a simple shoebox.
Operation Christmas Child is filled with full-color photos of children whose smiles help tell what is a thoroughly hopeful story. Samaritans Purse President Franklin Graham provides insight as the incredible stories of life transformation are told. Proceeds from Operation Christmas Child go to support the ministry it seeks to celebrate and honor.

Our family was able to participate in an Operation Christmas Child distribution last week in Costa Rica. Yes, they distribute the boxes year-round! Here are some lessons I learned from participating in the distribution. Last week, our family had the amazing opportunity to participate in an Operation Christmas Child shoebox distribution in Cartago, Costa Rica! We started the tradition before we had kids, and once our firstborn was around two, we had her join us in picking out items and helping to pack them. When we told our girls that we were invited to participate in the distribution, they immediately knew what we were talking about because they remembered how we pack the boxes each year. They were excited to see children receive boxes similar to the ones they pack!

Each and every year around this time, thousands of churches around the country participate in an organization called Operation Christmas Child. If you are unfamiliar with Operation Christmas Child, the gist is this: churches distribute pre-printed shoebox-sized cardboard boxes, which are then filled by families with toys, trinkets, and basic necessity items like toothbrushes and shipped off to children in non-first world countries so they can have something to open at Christmas time. Many churches I attended throughout my formative years participated in Operation Christmas Child, and many years my family and I dutifully picked up a few shoeboxes and went to the Dollar General in search of what we thought would bring poor children around the world happiness and joy. Sounds great, right? Well, not so fast. And Franklin Graham, son of famed evangelist Billy Graham, appears to be making a valiant attempt to go down in history as the Donald Trump of theology.

The sick and those in poverty, orphans and victims of war, children from minority and rural areas are amongst those that receive shoeboxes.

Before the millions of shoebox gifts collected each year can bring hope and joy to children around the world, each one has to be carefully inspected and made ready for international shipment by volunteers like you.
