There is a world elsewhere – William Shakespeare quote from Coriolanus

To the casual observer, they seemed to have little in common. He was a tall, darkly handsome, high-minded Baltic-German aristocrat whose large family had served the czar loyally for generations and were then evicted from their ancestral lands by the Bolsheviks. She was an orphaned heiress from bourgeois Hartford, Conn. Tired of being a gentleman farmer, Heinrich signs up with the new regime. Finally, in an ultimate act of quixotism, he volunteers for the Russian front, where he is shot by a sniper while shouting through a megaphone at a unit of the Red Army, telling them to surrender. Stiff-necked, snobbish Heinrich was never wholly persuaded by Hitler and his ilk. Despite her immersion in rural Germany, she remains wholly, believably American in her directness.

Why are theatre practitioners interested in producing an intercultural piece? How does it happen and what do artists do? Who benefits from doing intercultural work, and for whom is it intended? She has written extensively on Shakespeare performance in China, including a monograph Shashibiya: Staging Shakespeare in China Hong Kong UP, , and on Chinese theatre, both modern and traditional. Li runs traditional song-dance theatre workshops for both students and theatre professionals because she regards regular contact with the theatre as essential to her academic work. Having spent countless hours over the last five years putting plans in place for the Ninth World Shakespeare Congress — it was great to see the event finally get under way. It was at once a chance to put faces to names, and an opportunity to connect people with shared passions. I took great pleasure from seeing so many people from around the world enjoying lively conversation under one roof. Shakespeare brings people together, which can only be a good thing. I met Tina for the first time last year when I was out in Boston, and we began talking then about doing a session together in Prague.

He is banished for good. Coriolanus nearly gets into office, until, of course, the tribunes Sicinius and Brutus succeed in turning the crowd against him and have him declared a traitor. Yet somehow, his ability to transform these seeming virtues into fatal weaknesses, and to be undone by his inability to swerve from his own view of the world, that fascinates us as readers. Under attack from the Volscians, he, as a man of war, is completely unflappable; underfire from his own people, he is unredeemable. Though he is accused of treachery and banished from the city, he reaches the decision that it is he that is banishing Rome, not the other way around:.
