Here's the Secret to Helping Early Readers Make the Leap to Chapter Books

Inspire a love of reading from an early age and boost their development with these engaging, educational stories. Learning to read should be a voyage of discovery; a route to mastery of the code that grants young children access to a world of stories and adventures. Unfortunately, much of the reading material they are presented with at school — often for genuine educational or budgetary reasons — can be tedious and uninspiring, not to mention held together with sticky tape and stickier fingerprints. Below is a selection of books that should encourage infant-school age children to want to read and progress. This list is made up of new titles, so books published in the last year or two, rather than a round up of classics.

These 20 early chapter books are great choices for boys, though any young reader, boy or girl, is sure to love the humor, adventure, and heart in these fantastic stories. Hank is an endearing protagonist, always making his classmates and his readers laugh with his funny antics and adventures. His struggles with math, and reading, and spelling, and, well, school in general are relatable, and his efforts to try his best and save the day are quite admirable. George Brown wants nothing more than to be a normal, responsible year-old kid, but his efforts tend to land him in big trouble thanks to his super burps. Those magical and pesky belches promise disaster for George Brown and a whole lot of laughs for readers. Growing readers will appreciate the large text, funny illustrations, and familiar classroom setting.

That kind of desperation is probably why we have the leveling systems we have in place today. Where there is fear, there is profit. No matter. Even so, the complexity of the text can vary. I will indicate when a book is appropriate for the earliest of readers when I can.

Favorite Branches Series

With a picture on nearly every page, these books feel similar to what little kids are used to seeing in picture books, but their vocabulary is slightly more advanced and their storylines are longer. Whenever I'm helping kids make that transition into chapter books, I look for several key factors to select the best books:. Your kids will get lots of practice building fluency and stamina, which are needed as they move into traditional chapter books. When I introduce kids to a new early chapter book series, I like to read the first book as a read-aloud. Having adult support through the first book in a series helps kids become comfortable with character names, the setting, and plot of the story. Then, I have the child read the next book in the series to me.
