8 Tips for Helping Your Child Resolve Conflict and Be A Good Friend

Conflict resolution activities and strategies for the classroom. Teach kids to solve problems peacefully and resolve conflicts independently. Conflict resolution is an important skill that students need to learn — beneficial to them within the classroom as well as in everyday life. Not only will kids use conflict resolution in the classroom, they will also continue to use these skills as they grow. The conflict resolution skills they learn in elementary school will help them solve problems as adults. So how do we teach conflict resolution in the classroom? Children learn social-emotional skills by watching, practicing, and eventually adopting the behaviors for themselves.

Without a doubt, all of our students need a little help in the conflict resolution arena. These are tough skills, even for some adults! Early instruction can help normalize the process and help our students start thinking about their own feelings, reactions, and words when they have problems with others. When I teach kids conflict resolution skills , I follow a basic, step by step outline, building the most essential skills first. Keep reading to see what my process looks like!

All too often, we parents tend to rescue our kids from conflict; at camp, kids have a great opportunity to learn to solve such challenges on their own. One of our goals, then, is to prepare counselors to teach campers conflict resolution strategies, which the kids can use in similar situations at home like with their siblings! Give everyone a chance to take a breather from each other. Ask them each what they need to do to calm down.

As much as we try to avoid it, conflict is a normal part of life. Helping children learn to manage conflict effectively will also help them to experience more fulfilling friendships and enjoy better social experiences, both at school and outside of it. Of course, how well children are able to resolve conflict is directly related to their age, stage of development and life experiences — for example, a young child may not know how to compromise without assistance or have the emotional capacity to empathise with the needs of others. Equipping children of all ages with the strategies shared below will help them become more effective at resolving conflict and being a good friend.
