Target audience

This book covers database systems and database design concepts. It provides short, easy-to-read explanations of how to get database design right the first time and to help you avoid the many pitfalls that entrap new and not-so-new database designers. In particular, it serves as a basis for a model of type inheritance. This book is essential reading for database professionals. This book describes how to apply the business and technical approaches of Database Lifecycle Management DLM in order to make database change management processes more visible, predictable and measurable.

Database System Concepts by Silberschatz, Korth and Sudarshan is now in its 6th edition and is one of the cornerstone texts of database education. It presents the fundamental concepts of database management in an intuitive manner geared toward allowing students to begin working with databases as quickly as possible. It also contains additional material that can be used as supplements or as introductory material for an advanced course. Because the authors present concepts as intuitive descriptions, a familiarity with basic data structures, computer organization, and a high-level programming language are the only prerequisites. Important theoretical results are covered, but formal proofs are omitted.

As a Java developer ,Ive written a lot of stored procedures but what strikes me is I still dont know database design. Ask me to create a table for something new and I will struggle. Like how to I decide which really become the entities , which relations become table etc. Hopefully the books you suggested will be there on safari and make me better on this one. Post a Comment. The database design and modeling are one of those topics which rarely gets the attention they deserve, especially at the start of the project, but once things have gone out of hand then everybody talks about that.
