Great Balls of Fire : The Uncensored Story of Jerry Lee Lewis by Myra Lewisa stick to fish the filemot frith for treasures What the hell does that mean? Well, neither Myra nor co-author Murray M. Silver, Jr. is no Tosches Nick and should leave the language stunts alone, but this is all-in-all a good music biography about The Killer and the Golden Age of Rock for which he was a dream ... that is coming to birth. Like Elvis and others, he was drawn from a largely impoverished and illiterate South not unlike we pick out military (Ambush at Fort Bragg).
This book is really built around Jerrys marriage to his first cousin once removed, Myra. There are three acts: life from obscurity to fame in the Golden Age of Rock n Roll and marriage to Myra. Act II is the fall from grace and wilderness years after he exposure of his child bride in England with a soundtrack from the syrupy crooner era. The final act is reclaiming the throne in Elvis twilight and the ascendancy of The Beatles and Rolling Stones while sparking the career of Tom Jones. The remaining decades covered are compressed into a breathless epilogue that touches on shooting his own bass player and other highlights of the couples rebound years.
30 Years Ago: Jerry Lee Lewis ‘Great Balls of Fire’ Film Fizzles
Jerry Lee Lewis broke through as a rock'n'roll musician in the late s. His career foundered after he bigamously married Myra Gale Brown, his first cousin once removed, when she was just 13 years old. Immediately, he clocks Brown's year-old daughter, Myra Gale. It's not great for a year-old to be macking on a year-old, but the fact that the film casts Dennis Quaid, then 35 but looking raddled thanks to a bad peroxide job, opposite Winona Ryder, then 18 but looking much younger, makes it seem even worse. Quaid's performance is fine — the real Jerry Lee Lewis and the real Myra Gale Brown both found it convincing — but he is simply too old for the role. Whereas Lewis's brashness, selfishness and recklessness may be to some extent understandable in a young lad, it's desperate and creepy in a man who appears to be approaching middle age. After just a few seconds, he says: "I can sell that.
Ferriday, Louisiana, two little white boys scamper across the tracks to the black part of town and press their noses up against the window of a club wherein a riotous assembly is getting down to some delightfully raucous barrelhouse blues. Flash forward 12 years: a pair of hands vamps the piano with nonchalant violence, concluding with a chorus of the gospel evergreen How Great Thou Art. But that the self-styled Killer believed it himself, and therefore also in his own inevitable damnation, is only lightly skimmed over. Great Balls is cartoonish, a style in keeping with the heightened period camp of the movie as a whole, where the pinks are shocking, telephone conversations are split-screened like in Pillow Talk, crowds of extras fall into uninhibited jiving whenever that piano starts pumping and every Londoner wears a Gannex raincoat. That both movies turned belly-up at the box-office in America must, however, cast doubts on musical biopics for the time being at least.
All of the enticing elements were there: drama, stardom, controversy, rock and roll. Yet when filmmakers set out to create a movie around the life of Jerry Lee Lewis , the result, 's Great Balls of Fire , was disappointing, both at the box office and for the real-life rocker.
