Building a character in Star Trek Adventures

Tabletop game designer Modiphius Entertainment has released character creation guidelines for its playtest of Star Trek Adventures , the new pen-and-paper role-playing game planned for official release later this year. In an e-mail to playtest subscribers, company founder Chris Birch also announced plans to open pre-orders for the game in May. The playtest launched last year as a means for the game developers to clarify rules and allow fans to offer input as the game took shape.

The game does include suggestions on how to adapt to earlier time periods, though. I have an approximate idea for a character, and since that character would fit nicely into Starfleet, I have to assume that the character creation process should be able to spit out that character fairly easily. Control covers self-control, precision and discipline type situations. Fitness covers physical conditioning including endurance and general strength. Daring represents bravery and gut instinct type situations. In addition to the 6 Attributes, each character starts with 1 point in each of 6 Disciplines. Since the game kind of assumes that the characters are part of a Starfleet crew, we only have Federation or Federation-adjacent races to choose from.

This already gave some people a good idea of whether they were interested in buying the game now available on Drive Thru RPG! But the alternative is an in-game method of building characters during the first mission. You assign your Attributes from an array, choose a species which gives you some Attribute boosts and a Trait , assign two Disciplines, then choose a single Value for your character. Then you start play and as situations come up in the first mission you add in four more Disciplines, three more Values, four Focuses, and all four Talents. This is a great way to introduce people to the setting and game mechanics and there are some guidelines wish there were more for doing it in ways that create characters that are generally good rather than custom-built for the initial mission. The first decision for your character, just like the first thing to happen to a character in their lives, is what species you are. That Talent can be from any list the general one or the Command, Conn, Security, Engineering, Science, or Medical lists but your species also gives you access to two unique Talents that you can pick from.

Also is there a good way to report a bug in the creator? I found one problem during randomisation, though it may have been fixed since. There are three words. The bottom one says Feedback. Click on that and ut ooens a form that you can use to communicate directly with the creator.
