Lara Ardeche is a homecoming queen and beauty pageant winner-the "perfect" girl-until she finds, to her horror, that her weight is out of control. No matter how little she eats, or how much she works out, Lara keeps gaining weight. As she goes from a size 5 to 24, Lara realizes just how much of her identity is based on appearances. People are treating Lara differently now, like just another despised fat girl. Even her own parents seem more concerned with how she looks than who she is on the inside. What if Lara's weight is something she cannot change?

You know her. Great parents. Cool boyfriend. But things can change. An enjoyable and thought-provoking read.

Life in the Fat Lane is a novel for young adults written by Cherie Bennett. Cherie Bennett obtained the idea of the novel from her readers because she writes about real life issues many young girls are affected by. She suddenly faces a traumatic disease which cause her to gain over pounds in only a few months, with no cure, and her whole world turns upside down. The novels main character is Lara Ardeche. According to Lara, her family life is perfect because her parents are youthful, beautiful, and involve themselves in every aspect of her and her brother's life. She is elected homecoming queen for her high school, following in her mother's footsteps, and she is her father's "princess". Her best friend Molly is the complete opposite.
