As the story begins, and old woman and her thirty-year-old, mentally handicapped daughter, both named Lucynell Crater, are sitting on their porch. Tom Shiftlet, a wandering one-armed man, approaches them and comments on the beautiful sunset. The elder Lucynell Crater thinks he is a tramp. He notices their unused car and asks them whether they drive; the elder Lucynell Crater answers that the car hasn't run in fifteen years, since her husband died. They continue to talk, and when she asks him who he is and where he comes from, he asks how she'll know he isn't lying when he does tell her.
It is through her description that the reader becomes aware that Lucynell is an innocent. Likewise when Lucynell marries Shiftlet she is dressed in white purity. Another important point to note early in the story is the characters names. The name Crater suggests a void or emptiness, as if is something is missing which it is and Shiftlet or shifty suggests possible deviousness but can also represent the idea of a shift or a change the possibility to change. There is no doubt that Shiftlet has the possibility to change and this can be seen several times in the story. The car is important because it is something that Shiftlet has always wanted.
