Post-Porn Modernist by Annie Sprinkle

I was a NYC prostitute and porn star for twenty years; then I morphed into an artist and sexologist. I have passionately explored sexuality for over forty years, sharing my experiences through making my own unique brand of feminist sex films, writing books and articles, visual art making, creating theater performances, and teaching. I have consistently championed sex worker rights and health care and was one of the pivotal players of the Sex Positive Movement of the 1980s. I got my BFA at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and was the first porn star to earn a Ph.D.. I’m a popular lecturer whose work is studied in many colleges and Universities. For the past 12 years I have been collaborating on art projects with her partner, an artist and UCSC professor, Beth Stephens. We are movers and shakers in the new “ecosex movement,” committed to making environmentalism more sexy, fun, and diverse. In 2013, I proudly received the Artist/Activist/Scholar Award from Performance Studies International at Stanford, and was awarded the Acker Award for Excellence in the Avant Garde.

How did a nice girl from Granada Hills grow up to be a prostitute, porn star and controversial performance artist, in the process infuriating congressmen who made her a focal point of the debate over federal arts funding? Former Fluxus member Willem de Ridder will direct the performance, her first in California. Unlike other controversial performance artists, Sprinkle does not have a torrent of criticism for the National Endowment for the Arts administration or politicians like Sen. Jesse Helms R-N. The only way is more acceptance and compassion. I like it that the world is full of people who think differently than I do.

Annie Sprinkle has come to terms with the unpleasant reality. Dana R. Rohrabacher just as much as he needs her. The year-old Rohrabacher, who represents northwestern Orange County, has never met Sprinkle, a former prostitute and the star of more than hard-core pornographic films. The letter, which has become a hot item around Washington, went on to list various acts reportedly performed by Sprinkle with an assortment of inanimate objects and gynecological instruments. Last year, Rohrabacher tried unsuccessfully to eliminate government funding for the arts, citing the Libertarian argument that art ought to be free of government interference. He later returned to the issue when he aligned himself with conservative Sen.
