It is a novel that almost everyone educated in the United States has either read it or pretended to read it. But how many have seen the film "Of Mice and Men". The relative obscurity of screen version of this timeless drama does not mean that it was poorly done.

Many movies are derived from novels, and all of them have major differences from the book version. While there are many similarities in the movie and the book Of Mice and Men, there are many differences also. Some differences are presented through the characters, scenes, and the way the actors play their roles. The book portrayed the opening scene as a setting on the Salinas River, with one side having foothills leading up to the Gabilan mountains. The other side was the valley that was covered with trees. The movie shows the incident in Weed where the girl Lennie grabbed was running after George and Lennie.

There are going to be three main topics that I am going to compare them in. Those three topics are Actions, Appearance, and Dreams. Actions being of how they acted towards someone. Appearance being how did they dress and how they were described in the book. Dreams being of what they dreams about becoming in the future. Well if you have ever watched and read Forrest Gump, you would find out that the movie has well surpassed the book. In both stories the main character Forrest Gump goes through a series of misfortunate events that eventually turn him into an American hero and millionaire.

However, in the majority of the scenes, the dialogs are taken literally from the book. The first difference appears in the introduction of the film. The book starts by describing the surrounding landscape of the Salinas Valley where Lennie and George spend the night by the river. We learn that Lennie is mentally challenged and how this affected their stay at the farm where they previously worked.

When watching the film, the first difference the viewer can see between the book and the movie is how the characters are portrayed. A notable example would be Carlson. In the film, Carlson seems to play a much larger part compared to the information given in the book about his character.
