Savage Summit: The True Stories of the First Five Women Who Climbed K2, the Worlds Most Feared Mountain by Jennifer Jordan

Though not as tall as Everest, the Savage Mountain is far more dangerous. Located on the border of China and Pakistan, K2 has some of the harshest climbing conditions in the world. Ninety women have scaled Everest but of the six women who reached the summit of K2, three lost their lives on the way back down the mountain and two have since died on other climbs.

In Savage Summit, Jennifer Jordan shares the tragic, compelling, inspiring, and extraordinary true stories of a handful of courageous women -- mothers and daughters, wives and lovers, poets and engineers -- who defeated this formidable mountain yet ultimately perished in pursuit of their dreams.

The Forgotten Female Hero of Mountain Climbing

She was the first woman to successfully summit K2. Wanda Rutkiewicz rode Junak , the heaviest Polish motorcycle, which indirectly contributed to her interest in climbing. One summer day in , it ran out of fuel. She started waving to people passing her vehicle. The man riding the motorcycle which stopped to help was travelling with a colleague Bogdan Jankowski, who had been climbing for two years. This meeting resulted in their climbing of the Falcon Mountains. Her first major expedition was to the Pamir Mountains with Andrzej Zawada , which she found unpleasant due to fractured relationships with male climbers.

Her accomplishments included scaling Mount Everest alone, without supplementary oxygen or support from a Sherpa team, in She soloed all the great north faces of the Alps in a single season—a first for any climber. This feat included climbing the difficult north face of the Eiger in the Alps , in In , Hargreaves intended to climb the three highest mountains in the world— Mount Everest , K2 , and Kangchenjunga —unaided. On 13 May , she reached the summit of Everest without the aid of Sherpas or bottled oxygen; on 13 August, she died while descending from the summit of K2. K2 is regarded as a significantly more difficult and dangerous climb than Mount Everest.

Mountaineering was a family affair for climber Alison Hargreaves, shown here in her natural element with her children Tom left and Kate. By most accounts, she was in high spirits. It was August 13, , and she had a lofty goal: to become the first woman to ascend the three highest peaks in the world — Everest, K2 and Kangchenjunga, east of Everest — without supplemental oxygen. Under a cloudless sky, she left camp to check the second mountain off her list. Some names will forever be synonymous with mountain climbing. George Mallory, Edmund Hillary, Tenzing Norgay, Reinhold Messner … these names are known by enthusiasts ranging from armchair mountaineers to accomplished alpinists.
