The Mystic Masseur by V.S. Naipaul

The Mystic Masseur is more subtle in its social criticism than I had come to expect from Naipauls semi-autobiographical works and collected essays. The author does not break narrative to make explicit commentary about Indian culture in Trinidad, but the characters that populate this novel represent types that undeniably speak of the cultural experience of Indians living in Trinidad. Naipauls portraits arent unequivocally positive, or negative for that matter. Theyre starkly realistic, and when characters like Ramlogan, the main characters mercantile father-in-law, border on caricature, he is no less three dimensional for it. Even characters excesses are genuine.
The Mystic Masseur immerses the reader in a world that fades over the course of the novel, as Trinidadian Indians find themselves in need of a political leader more than a mystic. Naipaul successfully uses a single character to chart the evolution of an entire culture, in a way that not only succeeds as social commentary but also entertains.

It won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in , and was also adapted into a full-length film of the same name by the film company Merchant Ivory. This comic novel focuses on a frustrated writer of an Indian descent, Ganesh Ramsumair , who is supposedly a "mystic masseur", or a masseur massager who has magical talent. In colonial Trinidad, masseurs were regarded as medics of sorts. Using his supernatural talents, Ganesh rises from a life of poverty to become an extremely successful and eminent politician, chronicled by the book.

Pssst… we can write an original essay just for you. Elements of the plot, narration and characterization work hand in hand with the language techniques to convey the story in a humorous way, and in so doing ridicule and critique the Trinidadian society. From the onset, it is important to note that the core of the story itself—the absurd plot and the picaresque genre—is essentially comic and that language serves totell this story with a light touch. The Mystic Masseur is the story of the life of Ganesh Ramsumair, the son of an Indian man in rural Trinidad, who moves from being a struggling student in one of the prestigious schools in the capital to being a writer to a mystic masseur to a politician. The numerous career switches and their motivations are funny in themselves.
