The Titans Curse by Rick RiordanThis morning, while waiting with Celyn at her hospital appointment I told her I was going to write a review of the book I finished reading to her the night before and asked her if it deserved 5*. She said it did. So 5* it is.
I picked this book up from Celyns pile when we went off on her school trip (a week in the wilds) and being in a hurry I managed to get book 3 of the series rather than book 2 (we read book 1 last year). So weve jumped over The Sea of Monsters - but I dont think the reading experience suffered for it.
The short version is: if you enjoyed The Lightning Thief then youll enjoy this one too.
The book is written in the same vein as the first, mining the Greek myths for monsters and plot, and mixing in an American road trip along with Percys irreverent observations.
We dont get much of Annabeth in the book as shes a prisoner for a lot if it. We get lots of Thalia (Zeus daughter), a fair dose of Grover (a Pan-hunting satyr), and a lot of Zoe Nightshade (one of Artemis hunting posse).
A lot of the book is spent travelling by varied means from one side of the States to the other, a journey punctuated by encounters with monsters. Were set up for a big boss-battle on the Mountain of Despair and thats a fun battle with everything from gods and titans to dragons and bi-planes.
All in all an action-packed book to which Celyn was happy to return at every opportunity. And if some of the Greek myths stick with her ... all to the good!

Mao Zedong becomes Chinese Head of State
By early the war between the Nationalists and the Communists in China was nearing its end. The old imperial capital of Peking surrendered to the Communists at the end of January after a month's siege. Mao Zedong, the Communist leader, had earlier remarked in jocular mood that he had always thought it would be wonderful to be an emperor. We have stood up. The delegates included representatives of labour and business, cultural interests and overseas Chinese, but the Communists dominated the conference, which swiftly proclaimed the new People's Republic of China and endorsed the 'organic law' of the Central People's Government. Also approved was the new 'common programme', which declared that the era of imperialism, feudalism and bureaucratic capitalism in China had ended, to be replaced by 'the people's democratic dictatorship', which would guarantee freedom of thought and speech, and equal rights for women, and transform China from an agricultural into an industrial country. The conference selected a new national anthem 'The March of the Volunteers' and national flag, with one large and four small yellow stars on a red ground.
The PRC has for seven decades been synonymous with China , but it is only the most recent political entity to govern mainland China, preceded by the Republic of China ROC and thousands of years of imperial dynasties. They took China from a traditional peasant society with unrelenting poverty and frequent deadly famines to the world second-largest and fastest growing economy with a specialty in high productivity factories and leadership in some areas of high technology. Communism remains the official ideology, with the party in full control, but with a new large middle class and hundreds of very rich entrepreneurs in the 21st century.
