Mistress Of Mellyn
Martha travels to Cornwall and becomes fascinated by her employer and his dead wife. While struggling with her increasingly romantic feeling towards Connan TreMellyn, Martha also tries to solve the mystery of his wife's death in the haunted mansion while trying to avoid death herself. Set in 19th century England, Mistress of Mellyn weaves together elements from earlier Gothic novels such as Jane Eyre , The Woman in White , and Rebecca - a young, impressionable girl meets a mysterious widower in a mansion filled with the memories of his first wife who has suffered a tragic death. The romance between the young governess and her handsome employer is hampered by the mystery surrounding the tragic death of his first wife. Looking to solve the mystery, the young woman starts poking around the gloomy corners of the spooky mansion set on the wild Cornish cliffs. The novel was serialized in the Ladies' Home Journal , chosen as a Reader's Digest condensed book and issued in a treasury volume that included other Gothic authors such as Daphne du Maurier , Phyllis A.

Our heroine Martha Leigh is a prim and freshly minted governess who has been hired by the remote and demanding Connan TreMellyn to care for his daughter Alvean. As the departure of the three prior governesses suggests, Alvean is a difficult charge, though understandably so since the recent death of her mother, Alice. As Martha tries to connect with Alvean, she researches the history of Mellyn, and discovers hidden family secrets that still haunt the present. Now familiar with Alvean, she feels herself falling for Connan. Though the desire between Martha and Connan grows, Alice's tragic death continues to haunt them both and endanger any future they may have. A delightful combination of highbrow writing and lowbrow sentiments, Mistress of Mellyn is a guilt-free treat you can indulge in.
Post a Comment. Rory must have been going through a Gothic romance and feminine literature phase while she was at Stars Hollow High. I was familiar with all the previous titles Rory had read, as they are well-known classics; however, I had never heard of. It took quite a bit of hunting to find myself a copy of this novel. I checked multiple book stores, searched through several library systems, and even checked online resources. Eventually, I found a used copy on Amazon for a dollar so I snatched it up.
