10 Most Chilling Unsolved Mysteries in History

The 30 Most Fascinating Unsolved Mysteries in America

While supernatural events and conspiracy theories are fascinating, it's the murders and disappearances that are especially antagonizing. It's hard not to insist that someone out there knows the truth; that somebody holds the key that could bring any of these unexplained mysteries to light. After all, it's not unheard of for modern forensics to uncover elusive truths. Yet, in some cases, despite all of our modern technology, some mysteries are still left unsolved. Take for example the case of the "Somerton Man," who was found dead and immaculately dressed on an Australian beach. While we have DNA and many clues were found, including a note in a secret pocket of his pants, the cold case remains frozen solid.

Everybody loves a good mystery—and unsolved mysteries are all the more captivating. With that in mind, here are just a few of the top unsolved mysteries in North America—ones that just may stay that way forever. Unless some sleuth finds that one missing piece to the puzzle that will reveal the truth. Stranger still, nobody is sure who paid for all this. It was disconcerting when it happened, but at least there was a plausible explanation. Theorists developed crazy ideas—as they usually do for unsolved mysteries—that the bird deaths were an ominous omen about the Mayan calendar, signaling the end of the world , which of course turned out not to be true.

1. Why do we sleep:

From the drug lord who pulled off an impossible escape to an extraterrestrial ocean containing clues to alien life, here are the baffling mysteries the world will try to solve this year. A group of scientists in a plane caught sight of a mysterious piece of space junk right as it burned up in Earth's atmosphere above the Indian Ocean in November. NASA and other space agencies around the world monitor a large percentage of the millions of bits of space debris that orbit the planet, and researchers had been expecting the object — appropriately named WTF — to re-enter Earth's atmosphere when it was first spotted in October. They do have some ideas. Hayat Boumeddiene baffled investigators from the start. The year-old is suspected of helping plan the deadly attacks in Paris between Jan. She was the common-law wife of Amedy Coulibaly, one of the three attackers, but the level of her involvement remains unclear.

Science has come a long way, but we still have a lot to learn about the universe, and even ourselves. Humans have made a staggering amount of scientific and technological progress over the past century. And yet, despite all of this development to our collective human knowledge, mysteries still persist. Spooky phenomena occurring on every scale from the quantum to the cosmic that we have yet to elucidate. Close… but still with quite a ways to go. On that note, here are six of the biggest as of yet unsolved mysteries of the universe that still keep scientists up at night. This may seem like a straightforward question, but there have been countless attempts to find a definitive reason as to why humans need to sleep every night, and scientists are still unable to offer a single, definitive answer.

People love a good mystery. We wonder who Jack the Ripper really was or what happened on Malaysian Airlines Flight or what is the secret of the Bermuda Triangle. Certain mysteries are mysteries no more. Thanks to scientific tools that perhaps didn't exist at the time of the occurrences, investigators have been able to figure out the solutions to many earlier puzzles. Sometimes the researchers simply get lucky, thanks to a deathbed confession or stumbling across a clue that everyone else missed.
