What do the colors of a bruise mean?
A bruise, or contusion, is an injury to skin or tissues just under your skin. Everyone bruises occasionally. Keep reading to learn more about what causes bruising, the color-coded healing process, and warning signs that you need to see a doctor. Blood platelets then form a clot to plug the leak. As you age, you tend to have thinner skin and less fat under the skin.
The woman lay on the floor, too weak even to lift the phone to her ear. She had been sick for months at that point. She had seen many doctors. She had been given a variety of diagnoses, but no one could tell her — a usually vigorous woman of 39 — exactly what was wrong. It all seemed to start the previous autumn, when she dropped a can of paint on her foot.

Athletes in contact sports have many opportunities to get a muscle contusion bruise. Contusions are second only to strains as a leading cause of sports injuries. Most contusions are minor and heal quickly, without taking the athlete away from the game. Severe contusions, however, can cause deep tissue damage and lead to complications that may prevent an athlete from being able to play sports for months. Contusions occur when a direct blow or repeated blows by a blunt object strike part of the body, crushing underlying muscle fibers and connective tissue without breaking the skin. A contusion can result from falling or jamming the body against a hard surface. Contusions cause swelling and pain and can limit joint range of motion near the injury.
Bruises occur when small blood vessels under the skin tear or rupture, most often from a twist, bump, or fall. Blood leaks into tissues under the skin and causes a black-and-blue spot that often turns colours, including purplish black, reddish blue, or yellowish green, as the bruise heals. Bruises hurt, but most are not serious and will go away on their own within 2 to 4 weeks. Sometimes, gravity causes them to spread down the body. A leg bruise usually will take longer to heal than a bruise on the face or arms.
