Inflatable Fun Time at Galashiels Swimming Pool

This was a fantastic read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Keep reading to find out my thoughts…. This is what immediately drew me to this book — how often are thrillers set in swimming pools?!

Book Review: The Swimming Pool by Louise Candlish

Candlish tells us about the inspiration behind her new novel, a tense and seductive thriller set in a London neighbourhood lido. I talked to the poolside manager and discovered the intense training the staff undergo to prevent accidents and keep people safe. The first time Natalie visits Elm Hill Lido she remarks that it could be Miami Beach or somewhere far more exotic than her safe little suburb. Natalie is a very English character, though. The trees are beeches and oaks, not palms.

For teacher Natalie Steele, the school holidays are always spent with her husband Ed and daughter Molly. But not this year. Despite Molly's extreme phobia of water, Natalie is drawn to the lido and its dazzling social scene, led by glamorous Lara Channing. Soon she's spending long days with Lara at the pool and intimate evenings at her home. Real life, and the person she used to be, begins to feel very far away. But is the new friendship everything it seems?

March 22, A good book needs to start with a good first line. Of course you are! It continues in an almost surreal style that had me wondering whether this was a nightmare or reality; a game or a threat. The imagery insinuates a malevolent presence and a foreboding sense of horror with descriptions of "streetlights burning synthetic holes in the darkening sky," the "hostile" air, "near silence" and "thunderous" atmosphere. And then the abrupt statements: "He had done this to me," and "It will never be over. The main characters in this thriller are Natalie, her husband Ed, their daughter Molly and the Channing Family.

Share on:. The Swimming Pool is the story of a woman - Natalie - whose eyes are dazzled by a glamorous couple who live nearby. Natalie and husband Ed have a year-old daughter, Molly, and are the kind of parents you'd steer clear of at the school gates for fear of offending their politically correct sensibilities. Molly has a phobia of water. Rather than keep her away from rivers and pools, they subject her to a childhood of therapy. They keep up with changes to Molly's phone code so they can check up on her messages.
