Yona of the dawn volumes
Yona of the Dawn, Vol. 28 by Mizuho KusanagiI have been reading this manga series for almost ten years now, first in English online, then in Japanese in the magazine Hana to Yume each month (when I was abroad), and finally I purchased the volumes in French. I kind of deserve a badge for my fidelity and special discounts on goodies.
Be warned : I am in love with this manga. To be more precise I am in love with Hak.
You are not cute, Hak. You are hot as hell.
The main story is classical, at least if you have already read Fushigi yugi and its prequels: a red head princess is the reincarnation of a past legendary king. When she is betrayed by the man she loves and loses everything, she must find the descendants of the four dragons (all men) who once served her past incarnation and with whom she is linked. But Mizuho Kusanagi is able to take this very old trope and to do something completely new with it. The world building is stunning, the villain has disturbingly good motivations, the love story is epic and the heroin undergoes complete change through her journey.
Yona is an extremely realistic and round character. When we first meet her in vol.1 she is this cute but self-absorbed and spoiled princess. She is not used to violence, hell, she is not used doing anything by herself. When she is betrayed by her fiance and cast aside in the wilderness, Yona goes through incredible growth. What makes Yona so likable is that everything is tough for her. She is not one of these girls who learn to use a sword in one month. In fact, she has been constantly training for twenty volumes now, but is still no match for her companions. Yona is small and delicate, but she has a warrior spirit, she survives purely on will power. What also makes Yona exceptional is that she refuses to let hatred and revenge be her sole motivation. She is even able to understand the motivations of her enemy, the murderer of her father and past fiance. She wants to do what is best for her country (and even other countries), even if it means letting the bastard be king and helping him keep the throne.
Hak, her childhood friend and devoted bodyguard, is the funniest dude alive. Dont fight me on that! With his tall stature and incredible fighting skills, he looks like your usual bad boy. Except he is not. He is loyal, selfless, warm, fierce, rough and beautiful. Hak has been in love with Yona since they were kids, but was ready to see her be married to his best friend and be okay with it. We are talking about a dude who is so selfless that all he wants is the girl happy, even if it is with someone else. But off course, as we all knew it from the start, Hak and Yona are a match made by heaven. While Hak is very protective, he is never possessive, he trusts, respects and supports Yonas choices. While she took Hak for granted at the beginning, Yona becomes more and more caring and thoughtful. At that point of their relationship, they are able to rely and draw on each others strength, even when they are apart. They are my ultimate ship. I will sink with them if I have to.
My favorite moment of the series, and I have waited eight painfully long years to see it. Thank goodness, Hak is straightforward!
I just hope Kusanagi is not going to make me wait ten more volumes to have them making out. Please, I am passed the quarter of century now, I could die any time soon!
