Why I left my job at Google (as a software engineer)

Here’s why you only have a 0.2% chance of getting hired at Google

I did not graduate from an Ivy league school. I went to a community college in Idaho for two years, and then finished my CS degree in a small Catholic university. I started learning computer science in my junior year of college, because it sounded fun to me at the time. Even then, it would break every time I put a tape in it. To support myself through college, I took multiple part-time jobs like cleaning floors and working stand-up concessions. I applied to as many big tech companies as I could, and had the good fortune of landing a few phone interviews. I headed into these interviews thinking that the interviewer would ask me what a linked list or binary tree was.

But Google truly isn't for most people.

Is it because it was crowned the "Happiest Company in America"? Getting a job at Google is equivalent to running the gauntlet. Just how hard it is to land a job at Google? Dollars and Sense. On Purpose. We have somewhat of a social mission, and most other companies do not.

Google is the fifth highest paying company in the US, according to Glassdoor. But to land one of those high-paying jobs, you'll have to be strategic about it — especially if you're just out of school and have a low GPA. Wasn't difficult but unexpected. Of course, having a good degree is always preferable. When you're starting out, what matters more is how well you can interpret code, come up with different ways to improve it, and how quickly can you ramp up over time.
