Plath: Poems by Sylvia Plath

Im not sure if Im being morbid but it is almost impossible for me to read any of Sylvia Plaths work without thinking about her suicide. I guess its because her poetry is already so dark, and knowing that she suffered from depression and ended her own life, adds another element to it.

With that being said, I did appreciate the melancholy feel of this poem collection. Every sentence is beautiful and uses very evocative language. She was evidently so gifted and its hard to imagine she was only 30 years old when she died. Speaking of 30, the age was mentioned several times during the book so I wonder if that number held any significance to her.

Sylvia Plath was one of the most dynamic and admired poets of the 20th century. By the time she took her life at the age of 30, Plath already had a following in the literary community. In the ensuing years her work attracted the attention of a multitude of readers, who saw in her singular verse an attempt to catalogue despair, violent emotion, and obsession with death. She let her writing express elemental forces and primeval fears. In doing so, she laid bare the contradictions that tore apart appearance and hinted at some of the tensions hovering just beneath the surface of the American way of life in the post war period. All the violence in her work returns to that violence of imagination, a frenzied brilliance and conviction. At her brutal best—and Plath is a brutal poet—she taps a source of power that transforms her poetic voice into a raving avenger of womanhood and innocence.

The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath

I was a few weeks past my seventh birthday when Sylvia Plath died on 11 February , during one of the worst English winters on record. The snow, dangerously deep for children, grumbled and threatened in our ears as we fell backwards into its cold arms to make angels; in the mornings the bedroom windows were blind with ice. I would have been buried for ever under this record 20ft snowfall with no way to dig myself out. She was Although she had published her first collection, The Colossus and Other Poems , in , and her novel The Bell Jar , which appeared just before her death, Plath's huge and lasting fame was to be posthumous — heralded by the publication of Ariel in She lived on as a poet in the most extraordinary way — "I am lost, in the robes of all this light" — not least as a heroine to the feminist movement of the s and s. Here was a uniquely radical, stylised poetic voice which claimed for its subject something that had not previously appeared in "the canon" — the experience of being a woman.
